Food Coop development
This project is in response to the poor quality and high price of foods currently available on the South Side of Syracuse. The Food Cooperative is dedicated to bringing high-quality, reasonably priced foods/products to the residents of the Syracuse’s South Side. This project was made possible through a partnership and collaborative effort between the SCC, SU, SU Southside Initiative Office, SU College of Law’s Community Development Law Clinic, Syracuse University’s Whitman School of Management Entrepreneurship Program, Ground Works Capital Coalition (GC2), Gifford Foundation, Allyn Foundation, CNY Community Foundation, New York State Empire Development and with the support from the City of Syracuse. During the initial developmental stages of the food coop, the partnership encouraged community interest in the project by sponsoring “Store-for-a-Day” and “Living Room” events/presentations. The initial development of the food coop is complete. The business is owned and managed by members of the community. Once the structure is completed the food cooperative “Eat to Live” will move in to its home at 2327 South Salina Street.
